Rector’s Speech during the lecture: “Diverse Dynamics – Women Cultivating the Science Ecosystem” held on International Women’s Day
Esteemed colleagues, distinguished guests, dear students, and aspiring scientists,
Today, we gather to celebrate the indomitable spirit and invaluable contributions of women in science. Our journey through the realms of knowledge has been profoundly shaped by the brilliance, resilience, and innovation of women who dared to challenge the status quo.
In the annals of scientific history, women have left an indelible mark, from Marie Curie’s groundbreaking work in radioactivity to Rosalind Franklin’s pivotal role in unraveling the structure of DNA. Yet, our celebration is not merely retrospective; it is a call to recognize and amplify the voices of women scientists who continue to shape the frontiers of discovery today.
The path to gender equality in science is paved with the stories of countless trailblazers who defied stereotypes and shattered glass ceilings. We must strive to create an environment where women scientists are not only acknowledged but actively supported and encouraged. It is not just about closing the gender gap; it’s about leveraging the unique perspectives and talents that women bring to the scientific table. And here at the UP, we are working around the clock to actively promote and support this philosophy.
As we stand at the crossroads of progress, let us commit ourselves to fostering inclusivity, providing mentorship, and dismantling systemic barriers that impede the full participation of women in science. The future of scientific innovation depends on our collective dedication to ensuring that every aspiring female scientist is met with equal opportunities, recognition, and respect.
We are happy for the opportunity to discuss with Dr. Bea Maas from the University of Vienna about the pillars that fortify the foundation of progress in science—diversity, equity, and inclusion. In the vast expanse of knowledge, our collective strength lies in the mosaic of perspectives and experiences that enrich our scientific endeavors.
To the women in science, past, present, and future—your contributions are immeasurable, your impact immeasurable. I have seen it myself, and this is to let you know how much I appreciate your contributions. So, together, let us propel science into new realms of possibility, united in our commitment to a future where the scientific community reflects the diversity and brilliance of all its members.
Thank you very much.
